Tiered lunch boxes are often used to hold “dosirak”(도시락), a packed meal that usually consists of cooked rice and several side dishes. Modern “dosirak” lunch box are typically made of either plastic or thermo-steel containers, but more traditional lunch boxes were made of wood and lacquer, ceramic, and bamboo.  Home-made “dosirak” are packed into tiered lunch boxes that separate into different compartments—one to hold the rice and the other to hold side dishes.
